We initially needed to knock through from a kitchen into the conservatory to make a more extensive area because a new Wren kitchen was being fitted. The work involved knocking down a load-bearing wall and removing an original chimney breast in a Victorian property.
At some point in the work, it became clear that keeping the conservatory wasn't feasible, so Richard worked out a cost-effective way of building a side extension where it had been. Although this bumped up the cost, the finish was much better than the original idea would have been and was executed meticulously and with expertise by Richard and his team. They talked each step through with us, and although much of the work was carried out by Richard's competent son, Peter, Richard was there at least once a week, often every day and all day, to lead and supervise. We lived on the property throughout the work, and they were very considerate.
Where specialist work needed to be done - electrical work and flooring - all did the job efficiently and well. Some of these came at the last minute following suggestions/changes made by the building control officer.
Because we were pleased with the quality of the work, we asked Richard to fix the walls, ceiling and floor of our utility room as well - which his team could do straight after finishing the main job.
Through the process, we have found Richard, Peter and the team to be honest, hard-working and highly skilled across several areas. Richard is a man of integrity and takes pride in his planning and craft. We'd recommend Richard's company and work.
This must be emphasised:
It's a family business,
The same people supervised the job from start to finish, which ensures good continuity,
The owner of the company (Richard) came every day after the end of the game to check the quality of the work,
Sometimes, the work could not continue (weather, delivery delays, etc.), but I was constantly informed of progress.
The work carried out was of good quality,
Some of the work had an impact on the neighbour's property. However, this was carried out with due consideration and appropriate protection.
Andrews Group is a member of the Federation of Master Builders. As such, they have to pass stringent tests to maintain this membership. I would recommend Andrews Group as a member of the Federation of Master Builders.
In 2022, we took on a challenging renovation on an 1884 vintage Victorian house. It had been variously added to and modified over the years and needed to be brought up to date while working within the aesthetic constraints that we negotiated with the planners.
The big challenge was to build a 1st floor extension on the street side matching brick, lintel, and window style. Richard came up with imaginative lintel profiles exactly matching the existing. From the street, the house doesn't look touched even though it has a new roof and around 20% of the new facade. This was the objective so we are very happy.
Internally, the layout had evolved over years into something unliveable. We decided we needed to rotate the upstairs layout by 180 degrees moving a bathroom from the rear to the front and the master bedroom from front to back, this was successfully done but required a complete two story strip back to brick and then reinstallation of floors and ceilings! Not for the faint-hearted but worth it.
The result is a magnificent master suite with uninterrupted views over the New Forest.
I can highly recommend Richard and his team as consummate professionals who take great care to keep clients involved whenever the inevitable issues come up. They made sure we knew the options, so there were no surprises.
Well done, Richard and Co."
